Comment spam

For such a infrequently read blog as this poor effort, I have nevertheless recently been the target of the latest internet scourge - comment spam or blogspam. I have received, in the last week 10 comments basically saying "Great site!" with a return URL linking to cheap life insurance, big tits, teenage pics, and aid for my microdick. Not that I am not interested in any of these, but it's a pain to delete these comments. It's particularly disturbing that these spam comments are outnumbering the real comments 3 to 1.

Other smarter people have experienced the same thing. Mark of "Dive into Mark" has a thoughtful post on the topic. Several solutions have been posted including this one from Roj which I am sure I cannot incorporate. A quick and dirty MovableType hack was posted by Bb, which I have implemented. I think I got it right, and I will let you know if I get anymore spam comments or, for that matter, any comments at all.

When I have time, I plan to implement this hack to the notification e-mail and this system on my linux/apache server. That should solve the problem for a lightweight like me.

Why install the deprecated, less effective and far more complicated comment macro solution when you can get a simple plugin?

Great, Jay, I will plan to do it Monday.

Just a test to see if the comment system still works and to let you know that the spam comments, previously running a 3 a day, have disappeared for the last 48 hours using this change from Bb.

I would recommend the upgrade to MT 2.65 and the plug-in above. It's not difficult to install (or you could ask the folks at MT to do an installation for you).
